Redo or revisional surgery
In cases of insufficient weight loss or even weight gain after previous bariatric surgery, or in case of complications after a previous obesity procedure, there may be an indication for a redo operation (revisional bariatric surgery).
Among others, the following procedures are performed:
- Conversion of gastric band to gastric bypass
- Band after bypass
- Minimizer (synthetic band)
- Band made of autologous tissue
- Distalization (lengthening of the limb after bypass)
- Conversion of McLean/Mason to gastric bypass
- Conversion of sleeve to gastric bypass
- Reduction of the pouch after gastric bypass
A conversion to a bypass always involves a Roux-en-Y gastric bypass and never a mini bypass.
The risk of complications after redo surgery is greater than after primary surgery.
A smoking cessation of at least 1 month before surgery is absolutely necessary.
Redo surgery is not performed on active smokers!
